Year 6 Curriculum

Dear Parents,

Our Topic/Geography work for this term will be The Environment. This topic will then incorporate, as much as possible, many of the other subjects across the curriculum. We will initially be looking at different environments we find in the world and animals that may be found in them. We will also be looking at how we pollute The Environment and ways we can reduce this. We will also learn about recycling and perhaps investigate how much we recycle at home and in school. We will then move onto and look at environments around the world, such as rainforests. The following subjects will link into this:

Literacy: Non-fiction report writing, eg, learning about and writing about a particular environment or animal. Story Writing based around imaginary environments or being in a particular environment. Later on in the term the children will be revising play scripts and throughout close attention will be played to sentence and spelling work.

Science: Unit 6A: Interdependence and Adaptation-growing healthy plants; making and using keys; learning about habitats and how they relate to food chains.

Unit 6 B: Micro-organisms-useful and harmful micro-organisms and how they relate to our environment.

Numeracy: collecting data from how much we recycle and using this in number work. Use Excel to produce tables and graphs. Map and grid reference work-following directions and finding places.

ICT: using the internet to research about the topic. Using Photo-Story to produce images of the environment.

Numeracy work will also include number work, ie, revision and progression in place value and writing and reading

larger numbers, together with the properties of numbers. There will also be plenty of work in computation, ie, mainly addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to consolidate and improve on prior knowledge.

There will be a big focus on mental arithmetic, because this can greatly improve the confidence of children in the subject. The children will also be revising decimals, percentages and fractions and learning about co-ordinates, and the

reflection and rotation of shapes. Timestables are very important so if children need to practise these, could they

do this at home as well.

PE lessons are on a Tuesday and Friday so please could their kits be in school throughout the week. I aim to take

lessons outside in the first half term, but it may be inside if it rains. Therefore I do not mind if children wear

trainers for PE outside, but if inside the children will have to wear daps or do it in bear feet. Trainers mark the

hall floor, which then takes the cleaners forever to shine and wax.

The children have spelling logs they use to practise their spellings, and from Monday 14th they will be given a

spelling exercise to complete throughout the week, and then tested on the words the following week.

Finally our class assembly will take place on Friday October 16th.

If you do have any queries about anything at any time please do not hesitate to contact me and thank you for

your continued support towards the school.

Yours sincerely,

Mark Lawrence
