Year 5 Curriculum
Dear Parents,
A big welcome to Year Five. This letter will hopefully provide you with some details of the work we intend to cover during the autumn term so that you can support your child with their learning. It will also provide you with details of the day to day running and organisation of the classroom so that problems such as, forgotten homework or P.E. kits, can be avoided.
During the first term your child will have PE.on a Monday with myself, and on a Thursday with Mr Lawrence. It is important that they have their full kit in school for both lessons. The surface of the floor in the hall is easily damaged by trainers and so we would ask the children to use bare feet or daps. A track suit is very useful when the weather becomes colder.
In literacy the children will be reading work by significant children’s authors, learning how to take notes, write recounts and improve their ability to understand a range of texts. They will also be encouraged to correct and improve their own writing. Spelling is important. Each child has their own personal spelling log and they are taught strategies to help them learn. Parents are encouraged to check this card and ensure that their child is taking time to learn these words which are personal to them. In addition there will be regular spelling work given to the children as homework. Needless to say all children are expected to read regularly at home from their school library book. For most children this will be an independent activity. At school, reading, and higher order reading skills will be taught through guided reading sessions and there may be additional homework to accompany these sessions.
In mathematics the children will be further developing their computational skills. They will also be covering work on fractions and decimals. A club to encourage children to learn their tables will continue within the class and your child may well be talking about entry to different levels. Please encourage them to learn at home and know tables as division as well as multiplication facts. There are a variety of materials that I am happy to loan so please come in and ask..
In addition to these two areas of the curriculum children will also be learning about the Ancient Egyptians. Science will be taught by Miss Counsell on a Thursday afternoon and they will be working on sound. On Thursday morning they will do French with Mrs Merryfield.
Homework is given every Friday except for the Friday preceding a holiday. Please ensure that your child returns this homework on a Monday as I frequently set time aside on a Monday evening for this marking so that work can be returned promptly. Should they be unable to complete the work then please write on the homework and return it to me. I do understand that it is not always possible to complete homework and I am happy to accept a note on the homework signed by the parent. It is important that children see homework as a natural part of school life and settle down quietly to complete it. Having a proper pen/ pencil and paper to complete tasks can also be a good idea. If you do not wish your child to have homework please let me know.
Classroom space is very limited and the smaller the school bag that is brought to school the better. This also applies to personal belongings, the fewer the better. Please ensure that all items, especially uniform, are clearly marked.
I hope this letter will be of use to you, but should you need to see me for any additional explanations or further information, or for personal problems regarding your child, please do not hesitate to see me and I will do what I can to assist.
Yours sincerely,
Sue Walton (Class teacher)
