Year 4 Curriculum
Dear Parents,
I hope you have had an enjoyable summer holiday, and that your children are looking forward to the year ahead. Please find below the details of the topics and areas of learning that we will be covering this term in year 4. Our overall ‘topic’ is going to be ‘Where in the World?’ and this will be the theme through which the children will do a lot of their learning.
Numeracy lessons will involve addition and subtraction of double digit numbers, measuring using standard metric units, 3D shape, using analogue and digital clocks and using and interpreting bar charts. In literacy, we will be reading and creating newspaper articles, non-chronological reports and instructions. Our fiction work will include investigating and creating poetry, story writing and playscripts. Spellings will be given out on a Thursday and tested the following Thursday.
Our art lessons will involve re-creating images of atlases, maps and famous landmarks by using a variety of skills including sketching, painting and collage work. Geography will include developing map reading and research skills, while in ICT lessons the children will learn how to use a branching database to find out information. They will also be looking at how this information can be presented in bar charts and pie charts.
Our science topics this term are ‘Friction’ and ‘Circuits and Conductors’ and the children will undertake a variety of investigative and practical work throughout the term. PE lessons will be held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and will consist of ‘invasion games’ and ‘dance’ activities.
General music lessons will be linked to the term’s topic where possible. Please see overleaf for the RE focus for this term.
Finally, our class assembly will be held on Friday 25th September.
Thank you for your time, and please do not hesitate to come in and see me in the classroom if you have any questions.
Yours sincerely,
Miss V Counsell
