Welcome to St. Joseph's Primary School and Nursery Website

Year 3 Curriculum

Dear Parents,

Welcome to Year 3!  I would like to take this opportunity to let you know about some of the routines in Year 3, as well as outlining the work that we will be covering this term.

In Key Stage two the school day is slightly different. We now have morning break at 10.40am and lunch at 12.10pm. We unfortunately no longer get free fruit so your child is welcome to bring in a healthy snack for playtime.

Our P.E. days are Thursday and Friday. Please ensure that your child has the correct kit in school and that it is clearly named.  If your child is unable to take part in a P.E. lesson, it is important that you see me or send a note in with your child.

In this first half term, all of the skills that the children will be taught in Geography, Art, I.C.T. and P.E. will come under the topic of ‘Weather’.  In science we will be learning about rocks and soils. We will carry out investigations, looking closely at a number of different rocks and soil samples.

In P.E. we will be covering two units of work, one dance unit based on the weather and a unit to improve general ball skills and team games.

Mrs Mills will continue to teach the children music once a week. For this first half term this will be whole class instrument work.

A new subject the children learn now they are in year three is French. Mrs Merryfield will take the children once a week, on a Thursday, over the whole year.

Our Literacy will follow the new literacy framework. This term will be covering units on story settings, performance poetry and report writing. We will build on the phonic knowledge from key stage one and begin to explore various spelling strategies.

Numeracy work will also continue to build and develop on the skills learnt in Key Stage One. We will be covering units on number, calculation, shape, measure and time. There will a weekly input on times tables

Please also note that spelling tests will be held on Fridays with a new set given out for the next week.  Homework will be handed out on Friday to be brought into school by Tuesday.  Please ensure your child waits on the playground until the bell as there will be a teacher on duty to supervise them.

I hope that you have found this information useful and I look forward to meeting you all soon.

Yours Sincerely,

Rosanna Page – Class Teacher
