LETTER RELATING TO YEAR ONE PUPILS.

Dear Parent / Guardian,

Welcome to the Year 1/Year 2 class. I trust that your child has now settled into school life after the summer break. May I take this opportunity to list below a few key points of interest, which you may find a useful reference throughout the Autumn term.

In Literacy the children will be consolidating and building on their phonic work from the Reception class. They will be breaking down words into sounds or phonemes and using this knowledge to develop their spelling. When it is appropriate they will begin work on sentence structure.

In poetry, we will be reading and responding to poems linked to our senses. Our narrative work this term will look at stories with a familiar theme and setting. Non-fiction work will focus on labels, lists and captions. The children will begin to learn how to join up some of their letters.

You will notice by now that the ‘link’ between home and school with regards to reading is in the form of a card. Please record when you hear your child read and write any comments or concerns on the card in the space provided. Your child should be heard to read about once a week from his/her school reading book. As well as individual reading it is important to remember that your child will also read once a week with a small group in Literacy. We are lucky enough to have a good school library so please encourage your child to use this valuable resource. Library cards are kept in the classroom.  Parents are encouraged to choose a new book with their child at either the beginning or end of each day.

Spellings will be given out every Friday and the children will be given a week to learn them. In addition they will receive Numeracy homework based on work that is being covered in class at the time.

In Numeracy your child will be dealing with simple addition and subtraction and using vocabulary linked to this topic. In their number work they will learn to write numerals from 0-20 and then beyond. They will begin to understand place value and learn to position numbers on a track or line. Work relating to money will involve simple addition and subtraction of small coins. In shape and measure the children will learn to name a range of common 2-D and 3-D shapes and in data handling they will record information in simple tables, lists and block graphs. In both year 1 classes the same Literacy and Numeracy work are covered.

PE is every Monday and Wednesday; please ensure that your child has the correct kit on these days. If they are unable to do P.E for medical reasons or any other circumstances, either speak to me personally or send in a letter to clear them from the lesson.

Our topic for the term is ‘Health and Growth’. Curriculum subjects will link to this topic where possible.

Could I draw your attention to the importance of labelling items of clothing. Could you please make sure that all items of clothing are clearly marked with a name, thus helping the school to avoid the build up of lost property.

I trust that you will find the above information useful and hope that your child’s first term is an enjoyable one. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any problems.

Yours sincerely,

LETTER RELATING TO YEAR TWO PUPILS.

Dear Parent / Guardian,

Welcome to the Year 1/Year 2 class. I trust that your child has now settled into school life after the summer break. May I take this opportunity to list below a few key points of interest, which you may find a useful reference throughout the Autumn term.

In Literacy the children will be consolidating and building on their phonic work from Year 1. They will continue to develop sentence construction and punctuation. In poetry we will be reading and responding to a range of patterned poems. Our narrative work will look at stories with a familiar theme and setting. Non-fiction work will focus on instruction writing and labelling. The children will continue to learn how to join up some of their letters.

You will notice by now that the ‘link’ between home and school with regards to reading is in the form of a card. Please record when you hear your child read and write any comments or concerns on the card in the space provided.      Spellings will be given out every Friday and the children will be given a week to learn them. In addition they will receive Numeracy homework based on work that is being covered in class at the time.

In Numeracy your child will spend the first few weeks reinforcing addition up to 20 (including the addition of three numbers) before moving on to addition up to 100. They will learn to group objects up to 100, counting in tens, fives and twos. They will begin to understand simple place value linked to these numbers. Work relating to money will focus on simple addition of pounds and pence. The children will also be introduced to simple multiplication and division, through repeated addition and sharing. They will learn how to group 3-D shapes and in data handling they will begin to record information on simple bar graphs. In both year 2 classes the same Literacy and Numeracy work are being covered.

PE will be on Mondays and Wednesdays ; please ensure that your child has the correct kit on these days. If they are unable to do P.E for medical reasons or any other circumstances, either speak to me personally or send in a letter to clear them from the lesson.

Swimming will begin on Monday 14th September and will continue for 10 weeks.  Children do not have to wear ties on these days and could girls please wear their hair up as this will save time!
