Welcome to St. Joseph's Primary School and Nursery Website

Reception Letter

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to school, I hope you all had an enjoyable Christmas break.  Thank you for your kind support last term. I would like to let you know what we will be covering in Reception this term.

In Communication, Language and Literacy, we will continue to learn and revise the letter names and sounds. I will continue to put these up in the window. There may be weeks where this is not updated due to the children’s learning, which cannot be anticipated. We will share a number of different texts including fiction and non-fiction, which will link in with our topics.  The children will be encouraged to start writing letters and simple words including their name. We will also have a ‘writing session’ once a week. This involves the children writing a sentence, which has been modelled for them.

In Problem solving, reasoning and Numeracy, we will continue to recognise and order the numerals 0-10 and beyond. The children will be learning how to find one more or less than a number from 1-10. Simple calculating and problem solving will be introduced and weighing and measuring will be taught.

.

Our topic for the first half of this term will be on ‘Toys’.  We will carry out a toy survey to find out the most popular toy and compare this with toys from the past. If any Parents or Grandparents would like to come in and talk to the children about the toys they played with as a child or can lend us an old toy for our display, please let me know. We will also look at how the materials of toys have changed over the years. In addition to this, we will have a week of playing only with traditional toys and games.

Chinese New Year will also be celebrated with a week of fun where we will learn about the traditions and celebrations, including Dragon dancing where we will have a go ourselves!

After half term, our topic will be ‘Weather’. We will learn about the different types of weather here in England and around the world. We will look at the materials used to make homes to suit the weather and the wildlife that live in these countries. We will collect rain, make wind chimes and investigate ice and waterproof materials.

The children’s independence will be fostered daily, with activities such as dressing for Physical development and selecting resources, such as glue and scissors. Please help your child by encouraging them to put their own coat on their hook and book bag in their drawer each morning. Saying goodbye at the gate and allowing your child to walk into class by themselves will also encourage independence. If you do need to see me please do so before the bell or after school as I am sure you can appreciate the difficulty this can cause when organising the children for registration.

Please make sure that all belongings are named, even vests. We will continue to have Physical development on Mondays and Thursdays so please send named kits in on these days.  We aim to use the outdoor area and the school grounds on a regular basis so please make sure that your child comes into school with suitable clothing and always has a pair of named wellies in school at all times, thank you.

I hope that this information helps you to know a little more about what your child is learning this term.  If there is anything you wish to discuss, then please feel free come in and see either myself, Mrs Cook, Mrs Falber or Mrs Francis who will be very happy to talk with you.

I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that I am expecting my first baby, due in July.

Thank you for your wonderful cooperation and support, it is always appreciated.

Yours sincerely,

Laura Maynard – Reception Class Teacher
