LETTER RELATING TO YEAR ONE PUPILS

Dear Parent/Guardian,

I hope you feel your child is feeling settled in our class and looking forward to the term ahead. I would like to take this opportunity to let you know what we will be doing this term.

Our topic this half term is ‘dinosaurs’ (as you may already know!) This topic will link with as many curriculum areas as possible and will include looking at evolution and fossil hunting, different species of dinosaurs and the types of food they ate. After half term we will be looking at different festivals around the world as part of our new topic ‘Colourful Celebrations.’

In Literacy the children will be consolidating and building on their phonic work from the reception year. They will break down words into sounds or phonemes and will use this knowledge to develop their spelling. When appropriate they will move onto recognising and using blends. We will be using Information texts, looking at a poetry and reading stories and rhymes from a range of cultures. Later on in the term they will work on sentence structure concentrating on full stops and capital letters. Your child will continue to take a reading book home. Please record when you hear your child read and any areas or words they struggled on. Please also make use of our wonderful school library as it is such a valuable resource. If you are unsure of how to use the library please come and ask.

As your child becomes ready they will be set weekly spellings on a Friday to be learnt for the following Friday. Some weeks they will also be set Numeracy homework, this is sent home on a Friday to be back in the following week.

In Numeracy your child will be dealing with simple addition and subtraction including money problems. Any support you can give them at home with this tricky area is very helpful. They will learn to sequence the days of the week and learn about 2d and 3d shapes.

If possible could your child bring a pair of clearly named wellies with them on Fridays? Each week, weather permitting, the children will being going on a welly walk around the school grounds.

PE is every Tuesday and Friday; please ensure your child has a clearly labelled kit and uniform.

If you have any questions do not hesitate to come and see me.

Yours sincerely,

Miss Parry

LETTER RELATING TO RECEPTION PUPILS

Dear Parent/Guardian,

The Reception children will be continuing to follow the Early Years Foundation Curriculum and learning through a range of practical and play based activities.

During Communication, language and literacy lessons the children will be learning their sounds or phonemes through ‘Jolly phonics’, each week focusing on 3 different sounds. Knowledge of books will be developed through looking at traditional, nursery and modern rhymes, poetry and stories with predictable patterns. Each child has a personal library card, kept in the classroom. It is a really valuable resource and I would encourage you to come in and change your child’s library book with them as frequently as you wish.

In number work the children will be dealing with numbers to 20, learning through counting rhymes and games. They will begin to describe and sort shapes. We will learn practically how to add and subtract.

Once in full time the Reception children will be cooking most weeks. Please could I ask for a small half termly contribution of £1.50, which helps me buy the ingredients we use?

If possible could your child bring a pair of clearly named wellies with them on Fridays? Each week, weather permitting, the children will being going on a welly walk around the school grounds.
